Why should you get dental scaling?
Dental scaling or deep cleaning procedure is commonly recommended to patients with gum disease or a buildup of tartar and plaque. Dental scaling can easily reverse symptoms like swelling in the gum lining, red and tender gums, painful gums, bleeding, and loose teeth. Dental scaling often comes with root planing. Root planing works on the root surfaces to halt bacterial infection and save the teeth. This procedure is often suggested when there is a pocket formation in the teeth and it becomes extremely difficult to clean the area. There are many factors that can lead to the need for dental scaling, here are benefits of dental scaling:
- Get rid of bad breath/ Halitosis
- Aesthetic/ Improving smile
- Treats gum disease
- Prevents tooth lost/ tooth decay
- Protects the roots of the teeth
- Improving overall health
- Healthier teeth
Causes of the buildup of tartar and plaque:
- Poor dental hygiene
- Smoking
- Aging
- Changes in hormones
- Poor nutrition
- Family history
- Other medical conditions
Negligence of tartar or plaque buildup can cause chronic periodontal disease. This disease if left untreated can lead to:
- Bone and tissue loss
- Tooth loss
- Loose teeth/ moving teeth
Dental Scaling Procedure
Unlike standard cleaning, dental scaling goes much deeper into the gums. During a dental scaling or deep cleaning, the dentist goes deep below the gumline to remove plaque buildup.
The main goal of the treatment is to remove tartar and plaque that has builded up over time and smoothing the root of the tooth where it sits beneath the gum line.
The first step of the procedure is to numb one area at a time with anesthetic. As soon as the anesthetic kicks in, your dentist will start the deep cleaning process. Most of the time you will not feel anything, except for the movements from the dentist. Always make sure you are fully numbed and inform your dentist if you feel slight pain. After this step is done, your dentist will start the root planing to reattach the gum line to the teeth. This part of the procedure is done one section at a time. This procedure all together can take several visits to the dentist.
What to expect after dental scaling
There will be minor discomfort after the procedure itself. There can also be slight bleeding due to the removal of tartar and plaque stuck to the teeth, and loosen gums. You will be prescribed antibiotics by the dentist to help with fighting off any infections. Do seek medical attention from your dentist if you notice any of these symptoms:
- Worsening pain after a few days
- A fever that comes after the procedure
- An area doesn’t heal as expected
