Everyone has different natural gum tones as well as different opinions on its aesthetics. The need and demand for aesthetics requires the removal of pigmented gingival areas for a more confident smile. Today there are many ways this can be achieved. In this article we will discuss the available treatments for gum pigmentation in Stamford, read on…

What causes gum pigmentation?

Gum pigmentation, also known as gingival hyperpigmentation or “black smile” is caused by the excessive deposition of melanin. Although this usually doesn’t bring forward any serious medical problem, it is a common complaint by patients especially those with a high smile line (gummy smile). Among the factors that cause excessive deposition of melanin in the gums are:

  • The use of drugs (Addison’s Disease and anti-malarial drugs)
  • Heavy metals
  • Genetics
  • Endocrine disturbances
  • Syndromes as Albright’s syndrome
  • Peutz Jegher’s syndrome
  • Cigarette smoking (affecting females more than males)
Treatments for gum pigmentation
  • Scalpel technique
This technique involves the removal of the pigmented layer on the gums with a scalpel. Healing of the scalpel wound is faster than other techniques. However, it causes bleeding before and after the procedure.
  • Electrosurgery
This method is the use of high-frequency electrical energy, applied directly to the tissue to induce histological effects.
  • Cryosurgery
Cryosurgery is the freezing of the gingiva/gums with material such as liquid nitrogen. The rapid freezing of water and slow melting repeatedly will eventually lead to tissue deterioration.
  • Laser
Laser ablation is preferred nowadays as it is more effective, pleasant and reliable. However, it is a little more expensive and has a rather longer wound healing period.
  • Gingival grafts
This method involves taking an unpigmented free gingival autograft to replace the area that has been removed. This is an invasive and extensive procedure but has a lower rate of repigmentation even after 4.5 years.
