A Brief History of Veneers

Believe it or not, dental veneers originated in Hollywood. It was in the late 1920s when a Californian dentist named Dr. Charles Pincus created a device that can be worn by actors to enhance the look of their smiles during takes. Unfortunately, Dr. Pincus did not have the technology to apply the prosthesis permanently on the teeth.

As years went by, Dr. Michael Buonocore introduced adhesive dentistry. Dr. Buonocore discovered that by etching the teeth slightly with a mild acidic solution, bonding becomes stronger. The discovery made it possible for sealants and other restorations to bond strongly on the teeth. It was in 1982 when J.R. Calamia and R.J. Simonsen improved the technique created by Dr. Buonocore. With it, not only celebrities can avail of dental veneers but regular people as well.

Modern-day veneers are now more lifelike than ever! Porcelain veneers have the translucency similar to the enamel (tooth surface). With the use of technology and new techniques, dental veneers have since then been significantly improved.

Facts about Porcelain Veneers

  • Compared to ceramic, porcelain made veneers closely mimic the natural look of the teeth.
  • The application of the prosthesis requires the slight shaving of the enamel. About 0.5mm of the surface is removed.
  • It requires at least two dental visits to complete the procedure. After taking impressions, the custom creation of the veneers would take about a week. Afterward, the patient needs to return to the dental office for the bonding of the permanent veneer.
  • Porcelain veneers provide natural-looking and durable teeth restorations.
